GROUT Alpha v2

"Bronze Age Collapse" adopts the text-mode visual style that defined particularly during its peak in the 1980s. Utilising the same 1:2 ratio character tiles—standard in VGA (DOS System) used back in the day, the artwork embodies a transitional era, when text-mode graphics brought us epics and epochs alive. This visual language, once dominant, would eventually be replaced by bitmap and sprite-based rendering as graphical capabilities advanced in game development.

'Mercury, Memory' attempts to draw a parallel between pixel dithering (a drawing technique) and the memory loss phenomenon caused by metal (mercury) poisoning.

In the West, metal is often viewed as an element of progress, while in the East, it has historically and culturally been recognized as an element of decay, sickness, and death. Mercury, a metallic agent, is well-documented as one of the most severe causes of poisoning in the brain—gradually erasing memories and the sense of self.

The 12 pages that MEK created in the artwork are written and designed as if they were a documentation and study of this phenomenon, authored by someone whose brain is itself riddled with mercury.

Affection comes in different forms.

In our screen-induced lifestyle, one form of affection clearly becomes more prevalent than the others; The one with a relay, an unreliable messenger, reigned free in our dithered memories.

The (temporary) defeat of humane tangibility brought us closer to an entropy of our affection’s expression. Every love message relayed, every caress, done from a long distance.
