Our paradoxical pursuit of wanting to be seen, though being seen often leaves us unseen. We mask ourselves with makeup, filters, profiles, avatars and screens in a perpetual state of performative curated barriers. Trapped behind these constructed identities, we risk losing touch with ourselves and others.

SECOND SKIN

We live in a hyper-connected yet profoundly disconnected world. This is the paradox of our times. The tools meant to unite us can instead create vacuums where true human connection struggles to survive. Despite an abundance of social media platforms designed to bring us closer, many find themselves feeling more isolated than ever.

Casting lines off the pier, not bothered if we catch nothing. Just happy to be here and watch the sun fade the blue sky to a dusky shade of pink.

When you find yourself in the darkest of places, look out.

Looking Out

This self-portrait explores the complex interplay between identity and illusion. Beginning with a photograph of myself wearing a mask adorned with makeup, the image gradually transforms into an artificial version of me. Through this metamorphosis, I delve into the narratives we construct—both for ourselves and others. The mask and makeup symbolize the personas we adopt, blurring the lines between reality and facade. This work challenges viewers to reflect on the layers of identity they present to the world and to question the authenticity of their self-representation.

Make Me Up

The upturned carcass of a burnt out car is the only witness to the joy ride revelry.

Joy Rider

The harakeke (flax) plant represents the whānau (family) in Māori thought. The rito (shoot) is the child. It is protectively surrounded by the awhi rito (parents). The outside leaves represent the tūpuna (grandparents and ancestors).

Water lilies are often seen as symbols of purity and enlightenment. Just like these flowers emerge from muddy waters and rise above the surface, they represent the ability to transcend the challenges and obstacles of life. Water lilies teach us that even in the midst of adversity, we can find inner peace and clarity.

Rise & Bloom

Bali is a magical place When you spend more than vacation time in a place you start to see collages emerging Time past & present, culture new & old 

Balinese textile weaving traditions can be traced back to before 10th century. Fabric is not just for daily attire but for ceremonial dress, shrines and scared objects too. Silk and cotton are grown, treads dyed for up to a year in natural extracts, and certain cloth can take a year to weave. Labour intensive, yes, but imbibed with the soul of the island itself. Modern, faster means of production along with synthetic dyes threaten the authenticity and ecology of this traditional process. Will Bali's textile traditions survive another century?

'Sell or Be Sold'

Bali was, until recent years, self sufficient as an island. Farming rice and raising livestock sustained generations but pressure to sell land for tourist developments have seen families sometimes forcibly evicted and displaced. Those that cannot farm have to make a living and ironically often end up selling souvenirs or snacks to the very tourists to survive.

Sell Or Be Sold

Minted for the 2024 #OBJKT4OBJKT Event

Rituals and heritage are interwoven into daily life in Bali. These two women, one old, one young prepare traditional offerings or Banten. They are 'gifts for the gods, to create joy and balance, a skill passed down the generations. 
It is a beautiful reminder that we can actively participate in bettering the world around us with even the smallest gestures. 

This is an experimental photo collage from images I shot during my time living in Bali.

If video killed the radio star, did AI kill the artist?

There is a lot conversation around the legitimacy of AI as an art form. Many artists feel threatened by this new technology which has mastered the creation of incredible artworks in just a moment when they have taken a lifetime to do the same. Others have embraced AI as a new tool and medium. 

Historically, each new art form or practice has had to run this gauntlet of criticism and rejection only later to become part of accepted art history. 

I have photographed graffiti for decades, watching it go from social outcast to urban hero and finally to high art form. 

This work is a combination of graffiti photography, digital painting and text.
